Why You Should Be Reverse Shampooing

Confession time.  I know it’s one of the cardinal sins in beauty, but I am a hair over-washer.  I have straight, fine hair and it gets so greasy you’d think it was its job.  In the height of my addition, I was shampooing my hair every day – sometimes even twice!   Recently I discovered a trick that gives my hair lots of volume and keeps it hydrated and tangle-free.  Now it doesn’t feel weighed-down anymore and looks better than ever.

My secret? I use conditioner first and shampoo second.

No seriously.

When a friend of mine first told me about this “reverse shampooing” method, my first thought was: absolutely not.  Regardless, I’ve always been a curious one, so I threw caution to the wind and tested it out. It was love at first try.

Let me give you the low down.

  1. To start, apply conditioner all over your hair. Yes. Even your roots. Don’t panic. Just trust me.
  2. Next, use a Wet Brush or wide-toothed comb to pull the conditioner through your hair, ensuring there are no tangles.
  3. Now, this is important: DON’T RINSE OFF THE CONDITIONER YET.  THIS IS THE MAGIC STEP.
  4. Apply a small amount of shampoo on top of the conditioner concentrating on your roots.
  5. Now just rinse thoroughly and then you’re done!

Here’s what I love about it.

Applying conditioner before shampoo detangles your hair and protects it from the drying ingredients in your shampoo that make it foam (especially if you don’t use sulfate-free shampoo. Shame on you.).  The conditioner hydrates your roots, and protects your ends from dryness and frizz. Shampooing second helps break down some of the excess conditioner, making your hair volumized without the tangles.

This method is great because you can use whatever shampoo or conditioner is hanging out in your shower. With this method, you may even find that you don’t need to shampoo your hair as often. My hair feels healthier and stronger. I’m not ripping out strands and going through bottles of conditioner (my long haired friends know the struggle).

So for you brave beauties, give it a try!  Rest assured – you don’t need to do this every day. If you’re still skeptical, believe me when I say that I was hesitant too. However, when the day comes that you accidentally grab your conditioner first (ugh), and then try this out as plan B!

Oh, and shower singing is highly encouraged.

Love,
Margaret
